EXT. PRINCETON UNIVERSITY - DAY (1995) - ESTABLISHING

the New Jersey campus.

MED. SHOT - INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY - SCIENTISTS

and STUDENTS and OTHERS come and go.

CUT TO:

CLOSE SHOT - A FLY

is buzzing about inside a large bell jar.

EINSTEIN (V.O.)

... it will be in the year nineteen ninety-five when a small group of scientists gathers in a laboratory at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, to test for the very first time -- successfully at least -- a working time machine...

WIDE SHOT - LABORATORY - A GROUP

of four scientists observes the bell jar, which we now see is attached, by wires, to a wall of instruments, dials, and gauges. The scientists are: DR. EFREM MELLINGER, the handsome eminence gris of the group; DR. TRACI BRICKHOUSE, a brilliant and beautiful particle physicist; DR. TIMMY DENTON, a nine year old child prodigy; DR. IKIGUWI SASHIMI, a mathematical genius; and, DR. IRVING JULIUS, who stays in the b.g., pacing back and forth, talking to himself.

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)

... This group will be made up of the leading minds in their respective fields...

CLOSE SHOT - MELLINGER

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)
... Doctor Efrem Mellinger, who heads the project, will go on to win one Nobel Prize in Nuclear Physics, and another in Chemistry, as well as a Daytime Emmy...

CLOSE SHOT - SASHIMI

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)

... Doctor Ikiguwi Sashimi, a mathematical genius who will carry pi out to two hundred places -- while teaching at Cal Tech and delivering pizza for Domino's...

CLOSE SHOT - DENTON

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)

... Doctor Timothy "Timmy" Denton, a brilliant child prodigy who will graduate MIT at the age of five, win the Nobel Prize at the age of nine, and suffer burnout and retire to Florida when he's eleven...

CLOSE SHOT - BRICKHOUSE

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)
... Doctor Traci Brickhouse, the only member of the group not chosen solely on the basis of scientific achievement -- nonetheless she will spearhead the development of the high-speed particle accelerator...

MED. SHOT - DOCTOR JULIUS

paces back and forth relentlessly in the b.g., difficult for the camera to keep in frame.

EINSTEIN (V.O.)
(continuing)

... And, finally, Doctor Irving Julius, who will be the first human being to travel through time. Unfortunately, his trip is aborted just after it begins, and as a result he will be forever doomed to live one week in the past, a casualty of the early days of time travel experimentation.

WIDE - THE GROUP

is focused on the bell jar, and the fly within. They study it for several beats.

SASHIMI

What do you think?

MELLINGER
I say let's give it a try.
(to Denton)
Doctor Denton, throw the switch, please.

Denton walks over to the control panel on the wall, and throws a switch. We HEAR a loud BUZZ.

CLOSE SHOT - THE FLY

disappears.

BRICKHOUSE

It worked. It's gone.

MELLINGER
Well, it's not really gone. If our calculations are correct, that fly is now buzzing around in the year nineteen thirty-three, in Germany, at the National Socialist Party headquarters, in the office of none other than Der Führer himself, Adolf Hitler.
