On this day in 1881, Chester A. Arthur is sworn in as president, succeeding James A. Garfield, who has been assassinated. Arthur says in his first speech, "I'm Chester A. Arthur, not Chester the Arthur," and is jeered, since Garfield had used the same joke in his inaugural address.
