On this day in 1783, near Princeton, N.J., Gen. George Washington issues his "Farewell Address to the Army," announcing his intention to join the Navy.

On this day in 1889, North Dakota and South Dakota become the 39th and 40th states. They go out after the announcement and get totally smashed.

On this day in 1959, Charles Van Doren admits to a House subcommittee that he had the questions and answers in advance of his appearances on the NBC-TV game show Twenty-One, but that his ad-libs were his own.
