On this day in 1889, New York World reporter Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane), inspired by author Jules Verne, sets out to travel around the world in less than 80 days. She will complete the trip in 72 days, then do nothing but soak her feet in a bucket of ice for the next eight days.
