On this day in 1941, Josef Stalin assumes the Soviet premiership, replacing Vyacheslav M. Molotov. "Whoopee!" screams the headline in The Daily Worker.

On this day in 1954, medical student Roger Bannister breaks the four-minute mile at a track meet in Oxford, England, finishing in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds, but two minutes behind the all-comers winner, thoroughbred racehorse Native Dancer, and nearly three minutes and forty seconds behind a Formula 1 race car. Bannister does finish ahead of comedic actor Hans Conreid.
