On this day in 1959, President Eisenhower joins Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in ceremonies officially opening the St. Lawrence Seaway. The two world leaders, to the delight of onlookers, perform an impromptu water ballet.

On this day in 1963, President Kennedy visits West Berlin, where he makes his famous declaration, "I am a jelly doughnut" ("Ich bin ein Berliner."). What he meant to say, of course, is "I am a prune danish."
